HAMILTON, ONTARIO, CANADA-After setting a school record at Utah State in 1993 with nearly 3300 yards of total offense, Montreal Alouettes quarterback Anthony Calvillo has become one of the greatest signal-callers in Canadian Football history. Calvillo, a15-year CFL veteran, passed for 293 yards for Montreal in a 33-10 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Thursday in the Canadian Football season opener, which placed him second all-time in league passing annals. Calvillo surpassed Danny McManus on a 22-yard touchdown pass to Jason Armstead in the third quarter. This was made all the sweeter for Calvillo when one takes into consideration that it occurred in Hamilton where Calvillo began his CFL career. While the La Puente, Calif. native had difficulties adjusting to the wide dimensions and 3-down football of the Great White North, he was incidentally replaced in favor of McManus who led the Tiger-Cats to a Grey Cup in 1999 while later resurfacing in Montreal where he has significantly carved his niche. Of greater importance to Calvillo and the Alouettes, however, is the fact that they started the season 1-0, while Hamilton fell to 0-1 and will host provincial rival Toronto next Thursday. In other CFL action on opening night, Calgary bested British Columbia, 28-18.
