Twins Win Ninth Straight By Edging Pads

SAN DIEGO-Justin Morneau had a momentum-shifting home run and added three RBI as the Minnesota Twins won their ninth consecutive game with a 4-3 victory over the San Diego Padres Thursday at Petco Park in interleague play. Additionally, Scott Baker earned his fourth win of the season for the Twins, while holding the Padres to just six hits in six innings of work. Since this second wave of interleague play began a couple of weeks ago, Minnesota has been on fire as they have outscored opponents, 56-19 in winning nine straight contests, while they have gained six games on the division leading White Sox as well. Although San Diego led, 3-0 after three innings when Adrian Gonzalez hit a run home via a groundout, Morneau’s fourth inning shot turned the tide and propelled Minnesota to victory. In other interleague action Thursday, Tampa Bay pasted Florida, 6-1, Detroit edged St. Louis, 3-2 in 10 innings, Baltimore crushed the Chicago Cubs, 11-4, the Chicago White Sox blanked the Los Angeles Dodgers, 2-0, Oakland silenced Philadelphia, 5-0, Cleveland stymied San Francisco, 4-1, Toronto smoked Cincinnati, 7-1, and Houston hammered Texas, 7-2.
