Utah Baseball Defeats Cal, 16-8, To Win Series

SALT LAKE CITY – An 11-run second inning lifted the Utah baseball team to a 16-8 win over California on Friday afternoon, giving the Utes the series win.

Utah had 19 hits on the day, led by a 5-for-6 day from freshman Oliver Dunn. He also led Utah with four RBI. DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., had three hits, including two triples to tie the Utah record for triples in a game, and two RBI. Dallas Carroll had three hits with two doubles and two RBI. Ellis Kelly hit a triple with two RBI, and Hunter Simmons and Zack Moeller each also both drove in two runs.

Chase Bauerle earned his first career win after 4 2/3 innings in relief, allowing two runs on five hits with three strikeouts and a walk. Riley Ottesen surrendered six runs (four earned) on four hits with four walks and four strikeouts in the start. Hunter Rodriguez threw the final inning, allowing one hit and one walk with one strikeout.

Utah took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning after singles from Dunn and Carroll followed by a sacrifice fly from Simmons. Cal pulled ahead in the top of the second, 3-1, after an error put a runner on base to lead off the inning, three hits and a walk helped lead to three runs.

Utah’s 11 runs came off of eight hits with seven Utes batting twice in the inning. The Utes also took advantage of four walks in the inning. Notable hits included a two-RBI double from Moeller and a two-RBI single from Dunn. Kelly also drove in two runs in the inning.

California cut into Utah’s lead with three runs in the fourth inning and two in the sixth, bringing the score within four runs, 12-8. The Utes pulled back ahead in the late innings, adding three insurance runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh. Kelly and Keirsey hit back-to-back triples to lead off the sixth and Dunn and Carroll followed with back-to-back RBI doubles. Keirsey and Dunn hit back-to-back extra base hits for Utah’s run in the seventh.
