NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Yankees climbed within 4 ½ games of first place in the AL East by topping the division-leading Boston Red Sox, 6-2. Greg Bird launched a two-run homer and had three RBIs in CC Sabathia’s (sah-BATH’-ee-uhz) fourth win over Boston this season. Sabathia held the Red Sox to four singles over six innings before David Robertson and Dellin Betances (beh-TAN’-sehs) completed the combined four-hitter.

UNDATED (AP) — The Chicago Cubs still own a 3 ½-game lead over Milwaukee in the NL Central after both teams won last night. Kris Bryant slammed a two-run homer and leadoff hitter Jon Jay was 4-for-5 with two runs scored as the Cubs handled the Braves, 6-2. The Brewers were 6-3 winners against the Washington Nationals as Zach Davies scattered six hits in his 16th victory.

PHOENIX (AP) — Chris Ianetta (eye-ah-NEH’-tuh) and A.J. Pollock belted two-run homers in the Arizona Diamondbacks’ 8-1 pounding of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Zack Greinke (GREHN’-kee) improved to 16-6 and helped the DBacks pick up their seventh consecutive win by holding his former team to a run and four hits over six innings. The Diamondbacks extended the Dodgers’ season-worst losing streak to five games while moving 3 ½ games ahead of Colorado for the first NL wild-card berth.

NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. Open continues today following another five-set victory by third-seed Roger Federer. The 19-time Grand Slam champion trailed two sets to one before joining top seed Rafael Nadal (nah-DAHL’) and No. 6 Dominic Thiem (teem) in the third round. Second-round winners on the women’s side yesterday included top seed Karolina Pliskova (PLIHSH’-koh-vah) and four seed Elina Svitolina, along with Americans Coco Vandeweghe, Madison Keys, Shelby Rogers and Jennifer Brady.
