Jayson Rose Throws Shutout in Doubleheader Split With Stanford

PALO ALTO, Calif. – Jayson Rose pitched a shutout in game one as the Utah baseball team split a doubleheader with 12th-ranked Stanford, winning game one, 4-0 and falling in game two, 6-4.

In game one, Rose and Dylan Drachler combined to shut out the Cardinal in the win. Rose had a season-high eight strikeouts, allowing two walks and six hits over 7 1/3 innings. Drachler picked up his fourth save of the year, striking out two and allowing no hits over 1 2/3 innings of work.

DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., led Utah at the plate in game one with a 3-for-5 day with an RBI. Josh Rose and Oliver Dunn also each had two hits.

In game two, Stanford scored three runs in the seventh to take the lead in a 6-4 win. The game featured four lead changes with the teams tied at 3-3 through the middle innings.

Dallas Carroll and Josh Rose each had two hits for Utah in the game two loss. Utah used five pitchers. Josh Lapiana allowed three runs on 10 hits with one strikeout and one walk in the start, throwing 4 2/3 innings. Hunter Rodriguez earned the loss, allowing two runs on two hits over 2/3 of an inning, while Chase Bauerle struck out two over the final two innings. Trenton Stoltz and Tanner Thomas also pitched for Utah.

Game 1

After stranding a runner on in the first inning, Utah got on the board in the second. Josh Rose singled and advanced to third on the play following an error. Chandler Anderson laid down a bunt squeeze play for an infield hit to score Rose. Dunn kept the inning going with a single and Keirsey beat out an infield single to send home another run, giving Utah a 2-0 lead.

Utah added an insurance run in the fourth for a 3-0 lead, as Josh Rose led off the inning with a walk and scored later in the inning on an RBI single from Kyle Hoffman. Utah took a 4-0 lead in the seventh inning after hits from Keirsey and Dallas Carroll.

Stanford did not have a runner get past second during the game. The Cardinal put two on with one out in both the sixth and eighth innings, but Rose got back-to-back strikeouts in the sixth while Drachler also pitched back-to-back K’s in the eighth.

Game 2

Utah took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning after Keirsey reached on an error to lead off the game. He moved to third after a single from Dominic Foscalina and scored on a ground out.

Stanford put two on in the first inning before breaking onto the scoreboard with two runs in the second. A pair of leadoff hits put two on for a sacrifice fly. A two out walk and single also led to a run, giving the Cardinal a 2-1 lead.

The Utes pulled back ahead in the fourth inning, as Zack Moeller was hit by a pitch and Josh Rose just missed a home run in a double to right center. A ground out scored the first run of the inning and Dunn beat out an infield single to send another run home for a 3-2 advantage.

Stanford came back in the bottom of the fourth for a run set up by two leadoff hits. Although Utah got the first out of the inning in a rundown between third and home, the Utes couldn’t complete the double play on the next hitter and a run scored to tie the game at 3-3.

Utah took a 4-3 lead in the top of the seventh Hoffman and Keirsey were issued leadoff walks and Carroll came through with an RBI single to give the Utes the lead.

Stanford left two on in the fifth and stranded the bases loaded in the sixth before breaking through with three runs in the bottom of the seventh for a 6-4 lead. A leadoff single and double put runners in scoring position with no outs. A ground out got the first run, and a missed call on a strikeout as well as an error on a ground ball allowed to additional runs to score before a pair of fly ball outs ended the inning.

Although Josh Rose singled in the eighth, the Utes couldn’t make a late rally.
