Utah State Faces New Mexico in Mountain West Quarterfinals

LAS VEGAS-Thursday, Utah State men’s basketball (25-6, 15-3 in Mountain West Conference play) returns to action at the Thomas & Mack Center against the New Mexico Lobos (14-17, 7-11 in conference play) in the Mountain West Conference quarterfinals.

The rested Aggies are the #2 seed and are facing a Lobos squad that came from behind to vanquish Wyoming 78-68 Wednesday afternoon.

The Aggies are 5-5 all-time in the Mountain West tournament and 13-4 all-time as the #2 seed in a conference tournament.

Utah State scored 79.1 points per game during the regular season and surrendered 66.8 points per contest.

Junior guard Sam Merrill (21 points per game) and freshman center, Portuguese national Neemias Queta (11.6 points, 8.9 rebounds per game) have been the Aggies’ pillars all season.

The Lobos scored 76.1 points per game this season and surrendered 76.2 points per game, being outscored 2363-2360.

Senior guard Anthony Mathis (14.4 points per game), redshirt sophomore guard/forward Vance Jackson (12.7 points, 7.1 rebounds per game), redshirt junior forward Carlton Bragg (10.8 points, 9.2 rebounds per game) and sophomore guard/forward, Australian national Makuach Maluach (10.1 points per game) lead the Lobos on the season.

The Aggies have traditionally dominated New Mexico, leading the all-time series 25-11. Their sweep of the Lobos this season was the first time they have done so since 1961-62.

Utah State seeks vengeance against the Lobos, as they fell 83-68 to New Mexico in the 2018 Mountain West Conference tournament semifinals.
