Utah Baseball’s Comeback Comes Up Short at San Diego State

SAN DIEGO – Utah baseball was trailing San Diego State by one run with the bases loaded in the ninth, but couldn’t get a run across to tie the score. They ended up falling to the Aztecs 3-2 in Tony Gwynn Stadium on Friday, February 22.

It was the Utes opening game in the Tony Gwynn Legacy Tournament. After trailing by two runs since the third inning, Utah came up with two runs off of three hits and an error by SDSU in the top half of the eighth to tie the score. Unfortunately, the Aztecs came right back and took the lead back in the bottom of the eighth to go up 3-2.

Heading to the ninth down by one, Utah loaded the bases with no outs, but couldn’t come up with the tying run to force extra innings.

Utah’s starting pitcher Kyle Robeniol pitched a gem going 7.0 innings and only giving up two runs on four hits. Only one of those runs was earned. He also had four strikeouts on the night.

Oliver Dunn and Erick Migueles each had two hits for Utah and Migueles had an RBI to give him an RBI in the first four games this season.

After Utah scored their first run with the help of an SDSU error, Migueles singled to left field allowing Dunn to score and tie it up at two.

Ian MacIver came out of the bullpen for Utah and ended up taking the loss after pitching the eighth.

Utah finished the night with eight hits, but stranded 10 men on base for the evening.

The Utes will be back on the diamond tomorrow at 3 p.m. MT to take on Kansas State.
