Utah Baseball Earns 6-3 Victory Over Nevada

SAN MARCOS – Utah baseball earned their first victory of the season downing the Nevada Wolf Pack 6-3 in San Marcos, Texas on Sunday, February 17.

The Utes scored five runs in the sixth inning and had great pitching from Joshua Tedeschi to preserve their first victory of the 2019 season.

Tedeschi only gave up one run in 5.0 innings pitched and worked his way out of several jams to keep the Utes in the game until their bats came alive in the sixth inning.

Having one hit in the first five innings, Utah came through to score five runs on four hits in the sixth. Oliver Dunn got the inning going with a leadoff double. After Tyler Thompson and Zack Moeller were hit by pitches, Erick Migueles and Shea Kramer both got singles knocking in a run. After Rykker Tom hit a sacrifice fly to score one more run, Dominic Foscalina cleared the bases with a double and giving the Utes a 5-2 lead.

After adding one more run in the top of the seventh to lead 6-2, Nevada threatened in the bottom half loading the bases with one out. The Wolf Pack ended up getting one run, but Tedeschi did a great job of getting out of the jam limiting the damage.

The Utes finished the day scoring six runs on eight hits. Both were highs for the weekend.

While Utah’s bats were quiet early, their defense kept them in the game. Matt Richardson and Dunn had a double play to end the fourth inning. Foscalina ended the fifth inning by throwing out a Nevada base runner trying to score from second.

Tedeschi got the win for the Utes and freshman Dustyn Schramm came in to earn the save. He only gave up one hit and one walk in two innings.

Utah finished the weekend 1-2, but ended the weekend on a high note as Nevada had won its previous two games this weekend.

The Utes will travel to San Diego next weekend for four games beginning on Thursday, February 21 against Fresno State at 7 p.m. MT.
