USU Men’s Basketball Faces Fresno State in Mountain West Semifinals

LAS VEGAS-Friday Utah State men’s basketball (26-6, 15-3 in Mountain West conference play) seeks to bolster its NCAA Tournament hopes as they face Fresno State (23-8, 13-5 in conference play) in the Mountain West Tournament semifinals at the Thomas & Mack Center of Las Vegas.

In program history, the Aggies are 14-6 all-time in conference tournament semifinals.

Utah State advanced to this point by outlasting New Mexico 91-83 Thursday in the conference quarterfinals.

Junior guard Sam Merrill (23 points, 9 assists, 5 of 9 shooting) led the Aggies Thursday, as did rising freshman star, Portuguese national center Neemias Queta (16 points, 6 rebounds, 5 of 9 shooting).

The Aggies are winners of eight straight games and 15 of their last 16 on the season.

The Bulldogs reached the semifinals by routing Air Force 76-50. Senior guard Deshon Taylor (18 points, 10 assists, 6 of 12 shooting) and freshman guard Aguir Agau (16 points, 6 of 10 shooting, 4 of 6 on 3-pointers) led Fresno State.

Utah State leads the all-time series against the Bulldogs 36-25 and Friday is the fourth time the schools have met in a conference tournament. The Aggies are 2-1 in previous such games.

Five of the last six games in this series have been decided by three points or less, including one-point differences in each of the games this season.
