SUU’s Ally Thimsen Nominated For 2018 NCAA Woman of the Year Award

CEDAR CITY, Utah-Former Southern Utah University women’s soccer standout Ally Thimsen has been nominated for the 2018 NCAA Woman of the Year award following the conclusion of her collegiate career.

Thimsen wrapped up her career with the Thunderbirds this past fall as she became the program’s all-time goals leader after scoring her record-breaking 20th goal October 20 at Northern Arizona.

She is also second all-time in program history with 44 points.

Thimsen was an all-Big Sky Conference performer three times in her career, including an honorable mention distinction in both 2015 and 2017, and a second-team honor in 2016.

She was also all-academic Big Sky for all of her four seasons at SUU.

She is one of 581 nominees for the Woman of the Award, making 2018 the biggest year for the award in its history.

Of these, 251 nominees come from Division I schools and from 20 different sports.

Nominees are evaluated based on academic performance, athletic performance, service and leadership.

Officials from all conferences then select up to two conference nominees and each conference nominee is then notified of their status by the NCAA.

In early August, all conference-round nominees will be announced on ncaa.org.

All of these conference nominations are forwarded to the NCAA Woman of the Year Selection Committee which identifies the top 10 honorees in NCAA Division I, Division II and Division III.

From these 30 candidates, the selection committee then determines the three finalists in each division, comprising nine finalists.

The 2018 NCAA Woman of the year will be announced Sunday October 28 at an awards dinner at NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis.
