CEDAR CITY, Utah-Friday, as Southern Utah University women’s basketball celebrated its graduates going into the world, they also brought in a new Thunderbird to the fold.

Head coach Tracy Sanders confirmed the signing of Australian national Claudia Armato, a guard out of Melbourne.

Sanders was euphoric about the signing, saying “she’s exciting to watch on both ends of the court and will fit in right away both on and off the court.”

Armato currently attends Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School of Melbourne where she was named captain and team MVP last season.

In 2017, Armato was an SSV State Team representative and an AGSV team selection in 2017. In 2016, she made her first AGSV team and was named as the Big V Youth League Championship Finals MVP.

Armato has also previously competed in the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders program and was selected to the Global Camp to represent Australia, named a Team Global All-Star and the 2016 Asia Camp All-Star Game MVP.

Armato currently connects on 42.9 percent of her field goal attempts, with this increasing to 46 percent behind the arc in her senior season at Penleigh and Essendon.
