SUU Men’s Basketball Stays At Home This Week To Host Portland State, Sacramento State

CEDAR CITY, Utah-This week, Southern Utah men’s basketball, currently on a 2-game winning streak, stays at the America First Event Center to host Portland State on Thursday and Sacramento State Saturday in Big Sky Conference play.

Freshman guard Dre Marin has begun to show a flair for the dramatic for the Thunderbirds as he has made many big shots in the back-to-back wins against Weber State and Northern Arizona.

SUU is currently 7-7 on the season and 2-3 in conference play.

The Thunderbirds are -8 in scoring ratio as they have been outscored 1,102-1,094 on the season. They give up 78.7 points per game and score 78.1 points per contest.

Junior guard/forward Cameron Oluyitan scores 13.6 points per game and senior guard Brandon Better is averaging 11.4 points per contest on the season.

Entering Thursday’s game, Portland State comes into Cedar City with a record of 6-9 and 1-3 in conference play.

The Vikings score 79.9 points per game and surrender 76.2 points per contest.

Sophomore guard Holland Woods scores 15 points per game for the Vikings with junior guard Michael Nuga adding 13.1 points per contest for Portland State.

The Vikings, who are coached by former SUU standout Barret Peery, lead the Thunderbirds 9-1 all-time and seek their 10th consecutive win in the series.

Saturday, Sacramento State, currently sporting a record of 6-7 and 0-4 in conference play, comes into Cedar City.

The Hornets score 69.7 points per game and surrender 65.3 points per contest.

Senior guard Marcus Graves is Sacramento State’s star, as he averages 15.5 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.

The Hornets and Thunderbirds have a long history predating their Big Sky Conference days.

Saturday is the 27th all-time meeting between the squads in a series dating back to 1992.

The Thunderbirds lead the all-time series 14-12.
