SACRAMENTO, Calif.-Friday, as the competition for berths in the NCAA national championship meet at Eugene, Ore. percolated, various Utah-based Division I athletes were able to put themselves into position to contend for national titles at Sacramento State University for Day 2 of the West regionals.

In the men’s 800-meter run, Utah State’s Clay Lambourne advanced to the national championship meet June 6-9, by placing fourth overall in a time of 1:47.36.

The women’s 400-meter hurdles saw Brigham Young’s Brenna Porter place third overall at 57.18 seconds. Anna Cockrell of USC is the leader in this event, posting a time of 56.29 seconds. Porter also advanced to Eugene with her efforts.

In the men’s 3000-meter steeplechase, Matt Owens and Clayson Shumway are the #2 and #3 seeds respectively in this event headed to Eugene, while Weber State’s Jordan Cross is the #7 seed and also qualified, as did Spencer Fehlberg of Utah State, taking the 12th slot out of 13 available.

The women’s 3000-meter steeplechase saw Utah’s Grayson Murphy qualify as the #3 overall seed and Cierra Simmons of Utah State is #9 overall to also take a slot in this event for the national championship meet.

Those continuing to advance into quarterfinals in their events include Southern Utah’s Devon Montgomery in the men’s 110-meter hurdles (14.07 seconds), Brigham Young’s Alyssa Monteverde-Dalton in the women’s 100-meter hurdles (13.36 seconds) and Southern Utah’s Tre James (20.969 seconds) along with Brigham Young’s Derek Sorensen (21.274 seconds) in the men’s 200-meter dash.

The meet concludes Saturday.
