NCAA Cross Country Roundup: 9/15

LOGAN, Utah-Saturday, Brigham Young University’s men and women’s cross country teams each swept the team titles at the BYU Autumn Classic which was moved to Logan because of poor air quality in the Provo area.

The BYU women posted a score of 15 in the women’s 5-K, with Erica Birk winning the individual title for the Cougars in a time of 17:00.90. Her teammate, former Panguitch High star runner, Whittni Orton, placed second in a time of 17:15.10.

BYU women runners took the first 16 spots overall, with Anna Camp, a former Millard High star, placing 16th.

Utah State’s women placed second with 53 points with Bailee Parker, who placed 17th overall, finishing with the higest spot for the Aggies in the race in a time of 18:30.20.

Rounding out the team finishes were Santa Clara in third, Pacific in fourth, Dixie State in fifth and Westminster placing sixth.

For the men, the Cougars also posted 15 points, clearly out-distancing second-place Utah State, who posted 60 points. Weber State placed third with 87 points, Santa Clara was fourth with 90 points, Dixie State checked in at fifth place with 156 points and Westminster was sixth with 169 points.

BYU’s Clayson Shumway earned the individual title, posting a time of 20:56:20 in the men’s 7-K. He led a run of seven Cougars who took the first seven spots overall. Utah State’s Luke Beattie placed eighth overall in 21:12.90, with his teammates Sam Clausnitzer and Adam Hendrickson placing ninth and tenth respectively.

RIVERSIDE, Calif.-Saturday, at the UC Riverside Invitational, the Southern Utah men’s and women’s cross country teams each swept the team titles, giving the Thunderbirds their first win of the season.

In the women’s 6-K, SUU’s Angie Nickerson earned the individual title in a time of 20:00.06 with Madison Fruchey placing third for the Thunderbirds in a time of 20:26.20.

Other Thunderbird women to excel included Maddy Kauffman (20:41:90), Alison Pray (20:47:20) and Julieta Navarrete-Lamas (20:53:40) all placing in the Top 10.

For the Thunderbird men, winning the 8-K was Aidan Reed in a time of 24:02:10. Christian Ricketts placed fourth overall for SUU in a time of 24:04:07.

Other strong finishes for SUU in the 8-K came from George Espino (24:09:20) and Nate Osterstock (24:17:90).
