Former Weber State/Snow Head Basketball Coach Ron Abegglen Passes Away

OGDEN, Utah-Thursday, per an announcement from weberstatewildcats.com, former Weber State and Snow College men’s basketball coach Ron Abegglen passed away at the age of 81 Wednesday night.

Abegglen coached the Wildcats from 1991-1999 and led the Wildcats to victories over #3 seed Michigan State in the 1995 NCAA Tournament as the #14 seed and a 1999 NCAA Tournament win over North Carolina, also as the #14 seed that year.

All told, with the Wildcats, he posted a record of 152-83 (.646). His 152 wins are the third most in school history.

He led the Wildcats to three Big Sky Conference titles, in 1994, 1995 and 1999.

Abegglen was born in Vernal, Utah August 19, 1937 and enjoyed a coaching career that spanned over 40 years and never saw him experience a losing season.

After graduating from Uintah High School, he had a four-year playing career at BYU.

He then coached at Morgan High for 13 seasons and led the Trojans to a state 2-A championship in 1974 with a 26-0 record.

Over the course of the next 10 seasons, Abegglen coached at Snow College and as an assistant and later as the head coach at NCAA Division II Alaska-Anchorage.

After his tenure at Weber State, Abegglen coached two seasons for the London Towers of the British Basketball League after which he retired from coaching.

Abegglen also worked as a golf professional at the Paradise Golf Course of Fillmore. He is survived by his children, Kirk, Kris, Kent and Sara.
