Dixie State Softball Has 4 Honored

ST. GEORGE, Utah-Earlier this week, Dixie State softball had four players placed on the 2018 Division II Conference Commissioners Association All-West region teams.

These included outfielder Janessa Bassett, second base/shortstop Bailey Gaffin, pitcher Cambrie Hazel and catcher/first base Jessica Gonzalez.

This is the fourth consecutive D2CCA first team All-West region honor for Bassett, the senior out of Stansbury Park High School. Bassett also earned NFCA first-team All-West region and All-Pac West first team honors.

Bassett is hitting .370 with 57 hits, 36 RBI, seven home runs, eight doubles, seven triples and a Pac-West best 71 runs scored.

Bassett has also successfully stolen 41 bases in 42 attempts and has a squad-best 21 multi-hit games for the Trail Blazers.

This year, she was named as the Pac-West player of the week three times and earned NFCA national player of the week honors February 14.

Bassett is the Trailblazers’ all-time record holder in hits (280), runs scored (245), total bases (409), stolen bases (159), walks drawn (114), and triples (28).

In the outfield, she also has a .976 fielding percentage and has stymied opponents seeking extra bases and runs with diving catches and highlight-reel plays.

Gaffin, a native of Glendale, Ariz., has made the D2CCA first-team for the first time after making the second team last year.

Gaffin is hitting .342, amassing 51 hits, 44 RBI, 12 doubles, three home runs and one triple. Furthermore, she recorded 14 multi-hit games and 13 multi-RBI games for the Trailblazers.

On defense, Gaffin boasts a .945 fielding percentage with 71 putouts and 83 assists in 163 attempts, also helping Dixie State turn six double plays.

Hazel, the prodigious freshman out of Spanish Fork High School, has earned her first D2CCA honor, having been named the All-Pac West pitcher of the week four times, as well as a pair of freshman of the week honors.

April 11, she was named the NFCA National Pitcher of the Week. She has tossed five no-hitters and one perfect game in 2018. Her record is 19-3 with a 1.58 ERA and 141 strikeouts. She has also limited opponents to a net .151 batting average.

Gonzalez, a native of Kingsburg, Calif., has made the D2CCA All-West region squad for the third consecutive year. The junior hit .333 with 45 hits, 41 RBI, seven home runs and six doubles.

Gonzalez has 11 multi-hit and 11 multi-RBI games this season and posted two grand slams in 2018.

Her home run against Concordia-Irvine led Dixie State to the NCAA Super Regionals which commence Thursday as the Trailblazers host Chico State.

On defense, Gonzalez has a .987 fielding percentage, boasting 219 putouts and 17 assists on 219 chances. She also squelched seven stolen base attempts on the season.

Voting was conducted by the Division II Sports Information directors from institutions and conference offices. All 14 first-teamers will be placed on the national ballot for All-American recognition to be announced later this month.
