Dixie State Football Upsets Top 10 Colorado School of Mines on Senior Day

ST. GEORGE, Utah-Saturday, just days after news began emerging that Dixie State University could become an NCAA Division I institution, the Trailblazers’ football squad upset NCAA Division II #6 Colorado School of Mines 52-45 Saturday at Senior Day at Trailblazers Stadium.

In so doing, Dixie State amassed a school-record 682 yards of total offense while receiver Dejuan Dantzler caught 11 passes for a school-record 241 yards and three touchdowns.

Dantzler tied the school-record for catches in a game and became only the fourth receiver in program history to catch three touchdown passes in a game.

Signal-caller Michael Sanders ensued in his torrid streak of late by completing 31 of 48 passes for 553 yards and five touchdowns. The senior from Phoenix is only the third quarterback in program history to throw five touchdown passes in a game.

Furthermore, defensive back Trayvon Watson posted his 7th career interception, tying Richard May’s record.

In defeat,  quarterback Isaac Harker (26 of 43, 327 yards, 3 TD’s/2 INT’s),  tailback Cameron Mayberry (31 touches, 298 scrimmage yards, 2 rush TD’s) and receiver Riley Hoff (7 rec, 106 yards, 2 TD’s) led the Orediggers.

The win for the Trailblazers, which saw the teams combine for 1,318 yards of offense and 97 net points, was also only their second all-time against a Top 10 team as an NCAA Division II school.

The 6-4 Trailblazes conclude their regular season November 10 at Alamosa, Colo. against the Adams State Grizzlies for a 1:00 pm kickoff.
