LOGAN, Utah-Friday, as the Mark Faldmo Invitational commenced at Utah State University, numerous Utah-based collegiate athletes excelled during the first day of competition.

Southern Utah’s Angie Nickerson won the women’s 5000-meter run title in a time of 16:44.06, with Utah’s Hannah Allred placing fourth and her teammate Shaylen Crook finishing fifth. Skyler Storie of Dixie State placed sixth overall in the event.

The women’s pole vault title was won by Idaho State’s Elizabeth Reichlinger who leaped 11-09.75 feet. Her teammate, Jessica Swannack also posted this mark, as did Elise Machen of Brigham Young.

The men’s 5000-meter run title was won by Utah State’s Haydon Cooper on his home track in a time of 15:07.30. His teammate, Coen Haroldson placed second in the event, with Paul Matthews of Westminster finishing third. Eric Mellmer, also of Westminster, placed fourth, with Luke Cobabe and Trevor Neal placing sixth and seventh respectively in the event.

The meet will resume Saturday.

LA JOLLA, Calif.-Friday, select members of Brigham Young University’s track and field team competed at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational. The meet primarily featured various Division I and II schools scattered throughout the West, although Purdue, of the Big Ten, also made an appearance.

The women’s hammer throw title was won by Arizona State’s Maggie Ewen with a toss of 69.02 meters, while she also won the discus crown with a toss of 60.73 meters.

The open women’s discus title was won by Grand Canyon’s Latoya Gilding with a toss of 49.17 meters. Also in this event, Brigham Young’s Leah Thompson and Dailyn Johnson placed fifth and seventh, respectively.

In the women’s pole vault, Lauren Bartsch of Long Beach State placed first in the women’s pole vault with a leap of 3.65 meters.

In the men’s pole vault, Louis Pancotti of Cal State Northridge with a leap of 4.70 meters to conclude events for Day 1 of competition.

The meet resumes Saturday.

RIVERSIDE, Calif.-The Southern Utah men and women’s track and field teams excelled in numerous events Friday at the UC Riverside Highlanders Challenge, with many athletes taking titles.

The Thunderbirds competed against primarily fellow Division I California schools, as well as Division II Azusa Pacific, a rival of Dixie State University in the Pacific West Conference and fared well.

Among the Thunderbirds’ stars was men’s distance-runner Mike Tate who took crowns in the 1500 (3:50.10) and 3000 (8:28.28)-meter runs. Additionally, sprinter Tre James took the men’s 100-meter title in 10.45 seconds, while also placing second in the 200-meter dash in 20.82 seconds.

Other SUU individual winners included Morgan Porcaro in the men’s 5000-meter run in 17:36.33 and Jentry Skidmore  in the women’s high jump at 5-01.75 feet.

The Thunderbirds also received wins from Emma Nwachukwu in the women’s discus (145-11), Lacey Hochhalter in the women’s javelin (139-02), Frank Harris in the men’s high jump (6-06.75), Jordan Porcaro in the men’s hammer (178-08) and Skyler Porcaro in the men’s javelin (224-10).
