BYU Football Media Day Report

PROVO, Utah-Friday, BYU Football conducted its annual media day. Among the news to be gleaned therefrom was word from the voice of BYU athletics Greg Wrubell, that there will be “NFL-caliber wifi coverage” at LaVell Edwards Stadium. This entails the launch of a “new immersive multi-function game day app.”

When speaking on the experience of the coaching staff, head coach Kalani Sitake said “They’ve had some trial and error in the past, so we are getting a group that knows how to push the limit and we have to be able to do that here at BYU in order to grow as a program and get to the places we want to get to.”

When speaking on the lessons he’s learned as a coach, Sitake stated “I’ve realized that you just have to be yourself no matter what.”

Sitake also awaits the season opener (September 1 at Arizona) with rapt anticipation, saying “The season couldn’t come faster. We need time to get ready for it, but I just want it to get here.”

Assistant head coach, special teams/linebackers coach Ed Lamb implied he wants to see the kickoff and punt return teams “improve significantly” while he hopes he can be a successful motivator this season as well.

Offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes did not offer any new insight into the quarterback battle, citing the mercurial nature of one candidate playing well one day only to see another aspiring signal-caller reverse things the next day.

Tight ends coach Steve Clark got down to brass tacks, stating that he wants fighters and declaring “If they [the tight ends] don’t fight, they don’t play.”

Receivers coach Fesi Sitake stated that he wants his players to “do extra,” confirming that the little things are the difference between ultimate success and failure.

Senior tight end JJ Nwigwe said “the biggest thing that stands out is that it’s a new offense,” when speaking about what made the largest impact upon him from spring practice. Nwigwe also expressed his admiration for Grimes, saying “He’s really fun to be around.” He also implied, however, that Grimes knows how to get down to business when it’s time to get serious.

Finally, senior linebacker Sione Takitaki said he was moved to linebacker because coaches deemed it as the best position for him to help the team.

He gave a tease toward the Arizona game, closing his remarks by saying “you just have to watch the first game to see how we really perform.”
