13 Aggie Track and Field Stars Receive All-Conference Honors

LOGAN, Utah-Late Monday, thirteen Utah State track and field athletes earned a net total of 15 all-Mountain West Conference honors following their performance at the 2018 Mountain West outdoor championships this past week at Fresno, Calif.

Athletes, per the Mountain West, receive all-conference honors when they finish in the top three in an event.

For the men’s squad, thrower David Hirschmann earned honors by winning the discus title (181-1 feet) and second in the shot put ( a personal-best toss of 58-5.25 feet).

In women’s throwing, the Aggies’ Brenn Flint was also honored twice by the conference. She earned the shot put crown with a toss of 54-7.5 feet and finished second in the discus (173-2 feet).

Senior men’s runners Clay Lambourne and Jordan Beutler placed first and second, respectively, in the men’s 800, posting respective times of 1:47.96 and 1:49.08.

Dillon Maggard, the star of the Aggies’ long-distance races, placed second in the men’s 5000-meter run in a time of 13:55.85 while Emery High product Spencer Fehlberg placed second in the men’s 3000-meter steeplechase in a time of 9:02.74, also receiving honors.

Junior Sam Nelson earned honors in the men’s pole vault by clearing a height of 16-4.75 feet. Icelandic national, sophomore Sindri Gudmundsson successfully defended his javelin title with a Mountain West-record toss of 256-4 feet. Sophomore Kyle Morris joined Gudmundsson by being honored in the javelin event, placing third with a toss of 203-5 feet.

Junior Cierra Simmons won the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase crown, posting a school-record time of 9:56.60 while senior Tylee Newman-Skinner finished third in the women’s 1500-meter run by setting a school record in the event with a time of 4:23.99.

The women’s javelin also saw Aggies honored as senior Mia Estes placed second with a toss of 158-7 feet. In the shot put for the women, senior Olivia Moriconi finished second with a toss of 53.41 feet.

Utah State, therefore, will have a strong men and women’s contingent in track and field to compete in the NCAA West regionals May 24-26 at Sacramento, Calif.
