Utah principal apologizes for ‘inappropriate’ class survey

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah principal has apologized to the families of students who were asked in a survey questions on their religious beliefs, families’ economic status and if they or anyone they knew had ever considered suicide.

Canyons School District’s spokesman Jeff Haney says two Indian Hills Middle School teachers gave students the survey last week on their first day of class.

According to Haney, the teachers wanted to personalize their lessons plans according to the seventh-grade students’ answers and understand their sensitivities.

The students were told they could skip any questions that they didn’t feel comfortable answering.

Haney says while the teachers’ intentions were good, the district acknowledges that some of the questions were inappropriate.

He says the district has put measures in place to make sure this doesn’t happen again.
