Utah officials meet to address drought conditions

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Drought conditions have six counties in Utah declaring emergency disasters, with farmers and ranchers among the hardest-hit.

KUTV reports Utah’s Drought Review and Reporting Committee met Monday to discuss expanding the emergency disaster area.

Mike Styler, the executive director of the Utah Department of Natural Resources, says the conditions are about at the “worst level” they can be.

San Juan, Box Elder, Wayne, Carbon, Grand and Emery counties all have declared states of emergency.

San Juan and Sanpete Counties are some of the driest in the state and are considered “exceptional drought” areas.

Many farmers there are left without water for their crops.

The Drought Review and Reporting Committee will spend the next few weeks reviewing the drought report and then decide whether to take their concerns to Utah Gov. Gary Herbert.
