Utah man who stole motorcycle and crashed into a pedestrian sentenced to year in jail

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah man who was riding a stolen motorcycle when he crashed into a pedestrian last year was sentenced to a year in jail.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports 20-year-old Lutolofi Maama was sentenced Monday after pleading guilty in February to felony counts of theft, failure to remain at the scene of an accident involving serious bodily injury and failure to stop at the command of police.

Authorities say Maama struck 49-year-old Mark E. Swindle in South Salt Lake in August 2017 and then fled from the crash scene. Swindle died a week later at a hospital.

The West Valley City man was also ordered to 4 years of probation and to complete 50 hours of community service and a drug rehabilitation program.
