Utah man headed for trial in deputy death

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah man facing federal charges in the death of a sheriff’s deputy after being acquitted of aggravated murder in state court is headed for trial.
Court records show a plea deal didn’t come together Thursday for 44-year-old Roberto Roman. He did plead guilty to three less-serious charges of entering the country illegally and possessing guns, including an assault rifle.
A trial is set for Jan. 30 on additional charges, including intentionally killing a law enforcement officer.
His lawyer says Roman maintains his innocence in the 2010 death of Millard County Deputy Josie Fox.
Roman was acquitted in state court after testifying that her brother was with him during the traffic stop and fired the fatal shots.
Prosecutors dispute that. Fox’s brother Ryan Greathouse died shortly after of an overdose.
