Utah lawmakers push for clean air policy

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A bipartisan group of Utah lawmakers are pushing a series of environmental proposals to fix the state’s bad air quality which this week has been so bad that students haven’t been able to go outside for all their recesses.
The group of more than a dozen lawmakers said at a news conference Thursday that the poor air is hurting its residents and its economy, as many businesses and people may avoid the state.
The proposals include removing emission testing exemptions and boosting the use of solar thermal technology.
The event is only the latest in a multi-year effort to remedy the state’s bad air problem. Utah suffers from inversions that doctors warn can cause health problems, especially for pregnant women, people with asthma and the elderly.
