Utah facility will turn food waste into power, fertilizer

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Officials have kicked off construction of a new facility in the city of North Salt Lake that will convert food waste into natural gas to power communities and create fertilizer.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports the $43 million facility called an anaerobic digester will grind and liquefy food scraps and use water, heat, and bacteria to turn it into methane gas and fertilizer.
The Deseret News reports the facility will use 360 tons of solid waste daily that would otherwise sit in landfills, emitting methane, a greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere. The facility allows the gas to be captured and used as an energy source.
The facility called Wasatch Resource Recovery is expected to be running in fall 2018.
