Standoff ends in Spring City after gunfire exchange

A Sanpete County man is now recovering in the hospital after a standoff with police ended in an exchange of gunfire in Spring City Monday night.

According to officials, 53-year-old Paul Harward had fired a gun in the direction of a female friend around 5:30 p.m. after she went to check on him.

Officers throughout the County then responded to the incident at 370 North Main Street.

Harward was uncooperative with officials and Utah County SWAT was called after Harward stopped talking to officers shortly after 8 p.m.

Utah County SWAT was attempting to move a robot near the home to look through a window around 11:30 p.m. when Harward shot out of the front of the house at a police vehicle.

SWAT returned fire, hitting Harward multiple times.

He was taken to Sanpete Valley Hospital medical center with non-life-threatening injuries and then flown to Salt Lake Valley.

A motive is unknown,though a close friend of Harward’s stated he was recently diagnosed with a medical condition. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
