Somber council to choose replacement for fallen mayor

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The North Ogden City Council is expected to choose a new mayor to replace Maj. Brent Taylor, who was killed in Afghanistan while serving in the National Guard.

The Deseret News reports the city council is expected to meet Tuesday night to select one of five applicants.

City recorder Annette Spendlove says it’s a somber task to replace Taylor, who had taken a leave of absence from his post.

Officials say he would have returned this month if he had not been shot by of a member of the Afghan security forces while training commandos there.

The candidates include Brent Chugg, who has been serving in Taylor’s stead, businessman Sean Casey, former city council candidate Julie Anderson, former city councilman Steven Huntsman and Weber Board of Education member Janis Christensen.
