School board to take time considering “Redmen” name change

CEDAR CITY, Utah (AP) — School board officials say they will take their time with considering removing the “Redmen” mascot name from a Utah high school.

The Spectrum reports Iron County School Board President Stephen Allen says the board will not take an immediate vote on the issue surrounding the mascot at Cedar High School.

A proposal to remove the name went before the board on Tuesday.

The mascot, considered by many to be a racial slur, has been under fire as some students, educators and community members demand a change.

Others defend the name, saying it was originally meant to honor Native Americans and that its meaning had been contorted in an attempt at political correctness.

The school board appointed a special committee to research the topic. Ultimately, the committee voted by a 17-7 margin to make a change.
