Sandy residents ask why they didn’t hear about water problem

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Residents in a Salt Lake City suburb are asking why they were allowed to drink possibly tainted water for a week before they were alerted to the problem.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports officials in Sandy declared Sunday evening that its water is safe to drink after a fluoride pump malfunctioned because of a power outage on Feb. 6.

The pump flooded parts of the water system with large amounts of fluoride.

The city says the malfunction was repaired nearly two days after it began.

Residents say they didn’t receive notifications from the city.

The city says it initially thought the problem only affected an area containing up to 60 homes.

City officials apologized Sunday, vowing to rectify problems and ensure the water system is safe.
