Federal trial begins for Utah man charged in Millard County deputy’s death

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Federal prosecutors say Utah’s first female police officer fatally shot on duty was killed because a Utah man refused to be arrested after selling methamphetamine.
Roberto Roman went on trial Monday in her death for the second time. He was charged with killing a law enforcement officer after a Utah jury acquitted him on aggravated murder charges.
The 44-year-old Roman says it wasn’t him but the deputy’s brother who fired the fatal shots. He says they were in a car together when Deputy Josie Fox stopped them. Prosecutors say that’s not true.
Fox’s brother Ryan Greathouse died shortly after her 2010 death.
Roman’s lawyer says his client plans to testify that he gave a false confession shortly after his arrest because he was afraid.
Prosecutors say he told the truth the first time.
