Driver Suspected of DUI Crashes Into Ambulance Near Ephraim

EPHRAIM, Utah-Per a report in the St. George News, Saturday evening, three people were sent to the hospital after police say a man suspected of DUI crashed into an amublance three miles north of Ephraim on U.S. Route 89.

Utah Highway Patrol personnel responed to the crash at approximately 11:13 pm MDT at Pigeon Hollow Junction, where U.S. Route 89 intersects with S.R. 132 as well as an alternate route to Spring City.

The Ephraim EMS ambulance, which included a crew comprising the driver and two EMT’s in the rear, was headed southbound on U.S. Route 89 at the time of the crash, per a UHP news release.

UHP reported that the ambulance passed S.R. 132, an SUV occupied by a driver and passenger was headed eastbound on S.R. 132 toward the stop sign before reaching U.S. Route 89. However, the SUV’s driver failed to stop, causing the crash. The SUV struck the ambulance broadside and the impact caused the ambulance to roll.

The two EMT’s in the rear of the amublance were not wearing seat belts and suffered non life-threatening injuries.

UHP also reported that the driver of the SUV, a 63-year-old man, was not wearing his seat belt and suffered chest injuries.

The three who were injured were transported to the hospital in fair condition, UHP stated, noting that the two others involved in the crash, the amublance driver and the passenger in the SUV, were wearing seat belts.

The UHP also stated “during the  crash investigation, troopers determined the driver of the SUV had been drinking and are in the process of screening DUI charges.”

Both vehichles sustained heavy damage in the crash.
