Convictions, life sentence upheld in killing of Utah deputy

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Thursday upheld a man’s convictions and life sentence in the 2010 killing of a Utah sheriff’s deputy who was gunned down during a traffic stop.

The court denied Roberto Miramontes Roman’s appeal of his 2017 federal convictions stemming from the killing of Millard County sheriff’s Deputy Josie Greathouse Fox.

Roman was convicted of intentionally killing a law enforcement officer and of using a firearm during a crime of violence.

Roman was acquitted in state court of murder, but the appeals court rejected his argument that his federal prosecution violated federal constitutional protections against double jeopardy.

Fox was shot with an AK-47 after pulling Roman over near Delta. She also became the first female officer in Utah killed in the line of duty.
