Central Utah highway reopens after closure due to wildfire

SPANISH FORK, Utah (AP) — A portion of a major east-west highway in central Utah has reopened after being closed because of a wildfire still contained around only 2 percent of its perimeter.

U.S. 6 reopened Tuesday night after being closed after the fire jumped the fire Sunday. The closure was in Spanish Fork Canyon between the highway’s junctions with U.S. 89 and with U.S. 191.

The fire is approximately 15 miles southeast of Spanish Fork and had grown to 24,576 acres by early Wednesday.

Lightning started the fire Aug. 4. Approximately 650 firefighters and other personnel assigned it along with dozens of fire engines along with bulldozers, water tenders, helicopters and air tankers.
