Bomb squad detonates found dynamite sticks in Sevier County

Two hikers are being credited with discovering some dynamite sticks hidden off a hiking trail near Sigurd on Saturday.

According to the Sevier County Sheriff, the hikers were in Strawberry Canyon when they found pieces of clothing, some tools, a gun, pots and pans, aspirin and dynamite in an alcove under a cliff.

As they were pulling some of the items up from the ground they found a bundle of dynamite in a burlap sack along with some blasting caps. Some smaller sticks found had crystals built up around them.

The hikers went back down and called authorities, who deemed caution should be taken because of the crystallized sticks.

The Utah County bomb squad used the UHP/DPS helicopter to reach the canyon, where they decided to detonate the items there, because of the possible danger in moving the explosives.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, there is no further risk in the area.
