Body camera video shown in court for police shooting victim

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Attorneys for a Somali refugee shot by police are hoping body camera video of the incident helps persuade a judge to keep drug and robbery charges against the teenager in juvenile court.
Defense lawyer Lacey Singleton said Wednesday after showing the video during in court that the footage demonstrates Abdullahi “Abdi” Mohamed’s actions don’t warrant sending him to adult court.
The video from the February 2016 incident shows an officer firing multiple times at Mohamed after he refused to drop a metal stick during a fight. Mohamed survived but is still in a wheelchair.
Prosecutor Mike Colby says it’s important to separate the shooting from what Mohamed did before that.
Prosecutors cleared two officers of wrongdoing, but a police civilian review board found they didn’t follow department policy.
A judge will decide Friday whether to keep the case in juvenile court.
