Audit: Utah schools charging steep fees for sports, clubs

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A new state audit says Utah schools are charging students excessive and unreasonable dues to participate in sports and extracurricular clubs.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports the report from the Office of the Legislative Auditor General released Tuesday found that in many cases Utah schools also were ignoring fee waivers for low-income students.

The report looked at middle and high school programs in 20 districts across the state, including seven charters.

According to the audit, it cost $2,500 to be a member of the cheerleading squad at one school and $2,795 to participate in show choir at another.

The state audit concluded that the high fees for sports and clubs were breaking state law.

The state school board intends to conduct annual trainings with Utah’s school districts about school fees.
