Spring City man pleads guilty to child sex abuse and child bigamy

A second member of the Knights of the Crystal Blade has pleaded guilty to charges brought about because of the cult’s belief in child marriage.  John Alvin Coltharp of Spring City pleaded guilty to 1st degree felony sodomy of a child and 2nd degree felony child bigamy in Sixth District Court in Manti on Wednesday.  In a plea agreement, Sanpete County Attorney Kevin Daniels agreed to drop charges of child kidnapping and obstruction of justice in another case Coltharp was facing.  When asked by Judge Marvin Bagley if he understood the charges, Coltharp said he did and considering the alternative, he felt is was the right choice.  By pleading guilty, the victims, including Coltharp’s daughter, will be spared testifying at a trial.  Sentencing will take place on August 8 after a pre-sentence investigation by Adult Probation and Parole is completed.  Coltharp faces a minimum of 25 years to life in prison for the 1st degree felony and 1-15 years on the 2nd degree felony.

A third follower has also been charged with sexual abuse of a child.  Robert Roe of California has been in contact with the Sanpete County Attorney’s office through his attorney and will be coming to Utah to face those charges.
