Sanpete County Commission seat will go to primary election

Despite receiving more than 70% of the votes on Thursday night at the Sanpete County Republican convention, Ed Sunderland will face Justin Atkinson in a primary election for the open Sanpete County Commission seat.  Sunderland received slightly more than the required 70% of the votes cast by almost 250 county delegates in attendance, but because Atkinson chose to collect signatures to appear on the ballot, he and Sunderland will still face off in a June primary.

The State Republican convention is slated for this Saturday at the Maverik Center in West Valley City where Derrin Owens and Claudia Jarrett will face off for the Utah House District 58 seat.  Because the seat contains parts of Sanpete and Juab counties, if either Owens or Jarrett garners more than 60% of the vote, they will avoid a primary election.

State and Federal representatives present at the convention in Manti included Mia Love; State Treasurer David Damschen; and John Dougall, State Auditor; as well as a representative from Congressman Chris Stewart’s office.  Also present were numerous candidates hoping to represent Utah in the United States Senate.
